AI Voice Cloning Scam

What is an AI Voice Cloning Scam?
An AI voice cloning scam uses artificial intelligence to create a realistic imitation of someone’s voice. Scammers may clone the voice of a family member, friend, employer, police officer, or other trusted person and use it to convince victims to send money or disclose sensitive information.
A scammer may call saying:
“I’m in trouble. I need money urgently.”
or
“I’m calling from the bank/police. You need to make a payment immediately.”
Because the voice sounds familiar, victims may act before verifying the caller’s identity.
🚨 Warning Signs
Be cautious when someone:
- Calls unexpectedly asking for urgent money.
- Creates panic or demands secrecy.
- Claims to be a relative in an emergency.
- Requests a UPI transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or other immediate payment.
- Asks for OTPs, PINs, passwords or banking information.
- Refuses to let you independently verify their identity.
🛡️ How to Protect Yourself
Don’t trust a voice alone.
If someone claims to be a family member or colleague:
📞 Hang up and call them back using a number you already have, not the number provided by the caller.
🔐 Ask a question only the real person would reasonably know.
👥 Verify the emergency with another family member or trusted contact.
💰 Never transfer money simply because someone sounds familiar or creates urgency.
🚨 If You Have Been Scammed
- Contact your bank/payment provider immediately.
- If money has been transferred, call 1930 as soon as possible.
- Report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
- Preserve the caller’s number, recordings where lawfully available, messages, transaction details and screenshots.
Remember
Your ears can be fooled. Verify before you pay.
Familiar voice ≠ genuine caller.
STOP → VERIFY → THEN ACT.
