Social Media Impersonation

What is a Social Media Impersonation Scam?

A Social Media Impersonation Scam is a form of cyber fraud in which criminals create fake social media profiles or take over existing accounts to impersonate individuals, businesses, public figures, or organisations. The objective is to deceive others into sharing personal information, transferring money, clicking malicious links, or engaging with fraudulent schemes.

Fraudsters often copy profile photographs, names, and publicly available information to make fake accounts appear genuine. They may contact the victim’s friends, family members, or followers seeking financial assistance, promoting fake investment opportunities, conducting fraudulent giveaways, or requesting confidential information.

The existence of a profile using someone’s name or photograph does not necessarily mean it is authentic.

Warning Signs

Be cautious if:

  • You receive a friend or follow request from someone you already know who has an existing account.
  • A social media account requests money or financial assistance through private messages.
  • Someone shares suspicious links, investment opportunities, or giveaway offers through direct messages.
  • The profile has very few posts, followers, or recent activity despite claiming to represent a well-known individual or organisation.
  • You receive urgent requests to transfer money without independent verification.

What Should You Do?

If you discover a fake profile or suspect impersonation:

  • Do not engage with the impersonator.
  • Preserve screenshots of the profile, messages, usernames, and URLs.
  • Report the fake account using the platform’s reporting mechanism.
  • Inform your friends, family, or followers that a fake account is impersonating you or someone you know.
  • If money has been transferred or personal information has been shared, immediately contact your bank (where applicable), call 1930, and file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Review your social media privacy settings regularly.
  • Be cautious when accepting friend or follow requests from unfamiliar accounts.
  • Verify unusual financial requests through a separate phone call or another trusted communication channel.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on your social media accounts.
  • Regularly monitor for duplicate or fake profiles using your name or photographs.

Remember

Cybercriminals exploit trust by pretending to be someone you know. Always verify unexpected requests for money or personal information through an independent communication channel before taking any action.
