Cryptocurrency Scam

What is a Cryptocurrency Scam?
A Cryptocurrency Scam is a form of cyber fraud in which criminals deceive individuals into transferring cryptocurrency or investing in fraudulent digital asset schemes by making false promises of high returns, guaranteed profits, or exclusive investment opportunities. These scams are commonly carried out through fake cryptocurrency exchanges, fraudulent investment platforms, phishing websites, impersonation of crypto experts, romance scams, and social media promotions.
Fraudsters often persuade victims to invest in fake tokens, transfer cryptocurrency to fraudulent wallet addresses, or disclose wallet recovery phrases and private keys. In many cases, victims are shown fabricated trading profits on fake platforms and are later asked to pay additional “taxes,” “withdrawal fees,” or “verification charges” before accessing their funds.
Cryptocurrency transactions are generally irreversible. Once digital assets are transferred to a fraudster’s wallet, recovering them can be extremely difficult.
Warning Signs
Be cautious if someone:
- Promises guaranteed or exceptionally high returns with little or no risk.
- Pressures you to invest immediately or claims the opportunity is available for a limited time.
- Requests payment in cryptocurrency instead of conventional banking channels.
- Asks for your wallet’s private key, recovery phrase, or seed phrase.
- Directs you to use unfamiliar exchanges, trading platforms, or wallet applications.
- Demands additional payments to release your investment or profits.
What Should You Do?
If you suspect a cryptocurrency scam:
- Stop making any further payments or cryptocurrency transfers.
- Preserve all evidence, including wallet addresses, transaction hashes, screenshots, chat messages, emails, and website URLs.
- Report the incident to the cryptocurrency exchange or wallet provider, if applicable.
- Call 1930 and file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
- Seek legal advice where appropriate regarding the available legal remedies.
How to Protect Yourself
- Research cryptocurrency projects and trading platforms before investing.
- Use only reputable and well-established cryptocurrency exchanges and wallet providers.
- Never share your private key, recovery phrase, or seed phrase with anyone.
- Verify the identity of individuals promoting investment opportunities on social media or messaging applications.
- Remember that all cryptocurrency investments carry risk, and promises of guaranteed returns should be treated with extreme caution.
Remember
Cryptocurrency transactions cannot usually be reversed. Protect your wallet credentials, verify every investment opportunity independently, and never invest based solely on social media promotions or promises of guaranteed profits.
