💰 Financial Safety Guide

Protect your money before you protect your phone.

Scammers use fake calls, messages, websites, investment opportunities, job offers, payment requests, and impersonation to steal money from individuals and businesses.

The most important rule is simple:

Never make a financial decision because someone is creating fear, urgency, or excitement. Stop, verify, and then act.

🚨 1. Never Share Your Banking Secrets

Keep these completely private:

❌ OTP
❌ UPI PIN
❌ ATM PIN
❌ Debit/Credit Card PIN
❌ CVV
❌ Internet banking password
❌ Card details
❌ Net-banking login credentials
❌ UPI login credentials

Remember:

Your bank does not need your OTP, PIN, CVV, or password to “verify” your account.

📱 2. Understand UPI Safety

UPI is convenient, but scammers often exploit confusion about how payments work.

🚩 Common tricks

“Scan this QR code to receive money.”

“Enter your UPI PIN to receive your refund.”

“Approve this request to receive the payment.”

🚨 Remember

Entering your UPI PIN authorizes a payment from your account.

Before approving a UPI transaction, check:

  • Recipient name
  • Amount
  • Purpose of payment

If anything looks wrong, cancel the transaction.

💳 3. Protect Your Cards

Never send photographs of your debit or credit card to strangers.

Be especially cautious if someone asks for:

  • Card number
  • Expiry date
  • CVV
  • OTP

Additional precautions

✅ Enable transaction alerts.
✅ Check statements regularly.
✅ Freeze/block a card immediately if it is lost or compromised.
✅ Don’t save card details on unfamiliar websites.

🏦 4. Verify Bank Calls

Scammers may pretend to be bank employees and claim:

“Your account will be blocked.”

“Your KYC has expired.”

“Your card has been compromised.”

“We need your OTP to cancel the transaction.”

What to do

End the call.

Contact your bank using:

  • The number on your card.
  • The official banking app.
  • The bank’s official website.
  • A branch.

Never use a phone number provided by the suspicious caller.

📈 5. Beware of Investment Scams

Be extremely cautious about unsolicited investment opportunities involving:

  • Stocks
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Forex
  • Trading platforms
  • AI trading
  • Mutual funds
  • Real estate
  • Gold
  • “Pre-IPO” opportunities

🚩 Major warning signs

“Guaranteed returns.”

“Zero risk.”

“Double your money.”

“Secret strategy.”

“Invest today.”

“Limited slots.”

Remember:

Every legitimate investment involves some degree of risk.

Verify the investment provider and advisor independently before transferring money.

💼 6. Job & Work-from-Home Scams

Scammers may promise easy income through:

  • Online jobs
  • Freelancing
  • Reviews
  • Data entry
  • Product rating
  • Social-media tasks

They may ask you to deposit money before you can “unlock” earnings.

🚨 Don’t pay to get paid.

If you’re asked to deposit money to withdraw supposed earnings, stop.

👨‍👩‍👧 7. Family Emergency Scams

You receive:

“I’m your son. I’ve lost my phone.”

“I’m in the hospital.”

“Please send money immediately.”

Before paying:

📞 Call the person using their usual number.

If necessary, contact another family member to verify the situation.

👮 8. Digital Arrest & Government Impersonation

A caller claims to be:

  • Police
  • CBI
  • ED
  • Customs
  • RBI
  • Court officials

They threaten arrest or legal action unless you transfer money.

🚨 Stop.

A legitimate authority does not require you to transfer money to avoid a supposed “digital arrest.”

End the call and independently verify the claim.

🛒 9. Online Shopping Safety

Before purchasing from an unfamiliar website or social-media seller:

Check:

🔍 Business identity
⭐ Independent reviews
📍 Contact information
↩️ Return/refund policy
🔐 Website security
💳 Payment options

Be especially suspicious of prices dramatically below normal market prices.

📲 10. Beware of Fake Refunds

A scammer may say:

“We’re processing your refund.”

They then ask you to:

  • Scan a QR code.
  • Approve a UPI request.
  • Share an OTP.
  • Install an app.

Remember:

A refund should not require you to disclose your UPI PIN or banking password.

🔗 11. Don’t Trust Payment Links

A message may contain:

“Click here to pay your electricity bill.”

“Verify your bank account.”

“Claim your refund.”

“Pay customs charges.”

Instead of clicking the link:

Open the organization’s official app or website yourself.

💻 12. Never Give Remote Access to Your Device

Someone claiming to be bank, customer-care, or technical support may ask you to install remote-access software.

This can allow them to see or control your device.

🚨 Never give an unknown person remote access to a device used for banking or payments.

🔐 13. Protect Your Financial Accounts

Use:

✅ Strong unique passwords
✅ Two-factor authentication
✅ Transaction alerts
✅ Device security
✅ Updated banking apps
✅ Regular account monitoring

Don’t use the same password for your email and banking accounts.

📊 14. Monitor Your Money

Make it a habit to check:

  • Bank statements
  • Credit-card statements
  • UPI transaction history
  • Loan accounts
  • Investment accounts
  • Wallets

Report suspicious transactions immediately.

Small unauthorized transactions can sometimes indicate that your payment information has been compromised.

🚨 15. If Money Has Been Stolen

ACT IMMEDIATELY.

Step 1 — Contact Your Bank

Tell them clearly:

“I am a victim of financial cyber fraud.”

Ask what immediate measures can be taken regarding the transaction/account.

Step 2 — Call 1930

For financial cyber fraud in India, report the incident immediately.

Step 3 — File a Cybercrime Complaint

National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

Step 4 — Preserve Evidence

Keep:

📸 Screenshots
💳 Transaction receipts
🧾 UTR/transaction IDs
📱 Phone numbers
💬 WhatsApp/Telegram chats
📧 Emails
🔗 Website links
📄 Bank statements

Don’t delete the evidence.

🚫 Beware of “Money Recovery” Scams

After losing money, you may be contacted by someone claiming:

“We can recover your money.”

They may ask for:

  • Legal fees
  • Processing fees
  • Government charges
  • Cryptocurrency payments
  • Account verification fees

🚨 This can be a second scam.

Never assume someone offering guaranteed recovery is legitimate. Verify their identity and credentials independently before paying anything.

🛑 The 5-Second Financial Safety Test

Before sending money, ask:

WHO?

Who am I paying?

WHY?

Why am I paying?

WHERE?

Where did this payment request come from?

VERIFY?

Can I independently verify it?

RUSH?

Why am I being pressured to act immediately?

If you cannot confidently answer these questions:

🛑 DON’T PAY YET.

💡 Golden Rules of Financial Safety

🔴 OTP = PRIVATE

🔴 UPI PIN = PRIVATE

🔴 Password = PRIVATE

🔴 CVV = PRIVATE

🔴 Unexpected payment request = VERIFY

🔴 Guaranteed returns = RED FLAG

🔴 Urgent money request = CALL & VERIFY

🔴 Financial fraud = REPORT IMMEDIATELY

❤️ Remember

Scammers want you to act before you have time to think.

Fear, urgency, greed, excitement, and trust are their biggest tools.

STOP → CHECK → VERIFY → PAY

When it comes to your money, taking five minutes to verify is always better than spending years trying to recover a loss.
