📱 Mobile Safety Guide

Your smartphone is the gateway to your money, identity, messages, photographs, and online accounts. Protect it like you would protect your home.

A compromised phone can expose banking apps, OTPs, emails, WhatsApp, social-media accounts, contacts, photographs, documents, and personal information.

🚨 1. Lock Your Phone

Always use a secure screen lock.

Prefer:

🔐 Strong PIN/password
👆 Fingerprint authentication
🙂 Face authentication

Avoid:

❌ 1234
❌ 0000
❌ Your birth year
❌ Easily guessed patterns

Never leave your phone unlocked where others can access it.

🔄 2. Keep Your Phone Updated

Install updates for:

  • Android/iOS
  • Mobile applications
  • Security software
  • Browser

Updates often contain security fixes for vulnerabilities.

💡 Turn on automatic updates where practical.

📲 3. Download Apps Carefully

Use trusted official app stores whenever possible.

Avoid:

❌ Unknown APK files
❌ Pirated applications
❌ Cracked software
❌ “Free premium” apps
❌ Apps received through WhatsApp or Telegram
❌ Apps from suspicious websites

🚨 Be especially careful with APK files sent by strangers.

An app that looks like a banking, KYC, delivery, or government application may be malicious.

🔐 4. Check App Permissions

An app shouldn’t automatically have access to everything on your phone.

Review permissions for:

📷 Camera
🎙️ Microphone
📍 Location
👥 Contacts
📁 Photos/files
📞 Phone
💬 SMS

Ask yourself:

Does this app actually need this permission?

If not, deny it.

💳 5. Protect Banking Apps

Never allow unknown people to:

  • Access your phone.
  • Watch you enter your UPI PIN.
  • Install remote-access software.
  • Read your OTPs.

Keep banking apps:

✅ Updated
✅ Protected by device security
✅ Installed only from trusted sources

Enable transaction notifications so you know when money moves.

📩 6. Be Careful With SMS & Messages

Scammers may send:

“Your bank account will be blocked.”

“Your parcel is waiting.”

“Your KYC has expired.”

“Click here to receive your refund.”

Don’t click immediately.

Open the relevant organization’s official app or website yourself.

🔗 7. Think Before You Click

A malicious link can lead to:

  • Fake login pages
  • Payment scams
  • Malware
  • Identity theft
  • Account takeover

Before clicking:

STOP → CHECK → VERIFY

Ask:

  • Who sent it?
  • Was I expecting it?
  • Where does the link actually lead?

📞 8. Beware of Fake Customer Support

Searching online for customer support can sometimes lead to fraudulent numbers or pages.

A scammer may claim to be from:

🏦 Your bank
📦 A courier company
📱 A telecom provider
🛒 An online marketplace
💳 A payment service

They may ask you to install an app or share an OTP.

🚨 Never give an unknown person remote access to your phone.

🖥️ 9. Avoid Unnecessary Remote Access

Apps such as remote-control tools can be legitimate, but scammers may abuse them.

If someone tells you:

“Install this app so I can fix your banking problem.”

Stop.

A stranger should not control your device or watch your banking activity.

📶 10. Be Careful With Public Wi-Fi

Avoid performing sensitive financial transactions over unfamiliar public networks when possible.

When using public Wi-Fi:

✅ Disable automatic connection where practical.
✅ Avoid accessing sensitive services unnecessarily.
✅ Don’t accept unexpected security certificates.
✅ Keep file sharing disabled.

📍 11. Protect Your Location

Some apps may request continuous location access even when it isn’t necessary.

Review location permissions periodically.

Consider allowing location access:

  • Only while using the app.
  • Only when necessary.

Be careful about publicly sharing your real-time location on social media.

📸 12. Protect Photos & Documents

Your phone may contain:

  • Aadhaar/PAN copies
  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • Bank documents
  • Personal photographs
  • Work documents

Avoid storing or sharing sensitive documents unnecessarily.

Before sending an identity document:

Ask:

Who needs it? Why do they need it? How will they store it?

Where appropriate, use official document-sharing systems rather than sending sensitive files to unknown individuals.

☁️ 13. Back Up Important Data

Back up important:

📸 Photos
📄 Documents
👥 Contacts
📝 Notes

A secure backup can help if your phone is:

  • Lost
  • Stolen
  • Damaged
  • Locked by malware

🔔 14. Pay Attention to Security Alerts

Don’t ignore unexpected alerts about:

  • New device logins
  • Password changes
  • SIM changes
  • Banking transactions
  • Account recovery attempts

If you didn’t perform the activity:

Act immediately.

📱 15. Protect Your SIM

Your phone number may be connected to banking and account recovery.

Be alert if:

⚠️ Your phone suddenly loses mobile service without explanation.
⚠️ You receive unexpected SIM-related messages.
⚠️ You receive alerts about a SIM replacement you didn’t request.

Contact your mobile operator through an official channel if you suspect unauthorized SIM activity.

🛍️ 16. Be Careful With Mobile Payments

Before approving a payment:

Check:

Recipient → Amount → Purpose

Never approve a payment simply because someone says:

“This is required to receive money.”

🔑 17. Protect Your Passwords

Don’t store passwords:

❌ In plain text notes
❌ In screenshots
❌ In WhatsApp chats
❌ In unprotected documents

Use a reputable password manager or another secure method.

Use different passwords for important accounts.

🚨 18. What If Your Phone Is Stolen?

Act quickly:

1. Lock the device remotely if your device supports it.

2. Contact your mobile operator to block the SIM if necessary.

3. Contact your bank if banking apps or payment services may be accessible.

4. Change important passwords from another trusted device.

5. Report the theft to the appropriate authorities.

6. Monitor financial accounts for unauthorized activity.

🦠 19. What If You Installed a Suspicious App?

If you accidentally installed an unknown or suspicious application:

Immediately:

  1. Disconnect the device from the internet if appropriate.
  2. Don’t use the device for banking until you’ve assessed it.
  3. Uninstall the suspicious app if it can be safely removed.
  4. Review its permissions.
  5. Run your device’s security checks.
  6. Change important passwords from a trusted device.
  7. Contact your bank if financial information may have been exposed.

If you suspect serious compromise, seek professional technical assistance.

🚨 20. If Money Has Been Stolen

If a scam involving your phone results in unauthorized financial transactions:

📞 Call 1930 immediately

Also report the incident through the official:
National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

Contact your bank/payment provider immediately and preserve transaction details and other evidence.
