Deepfake Identity Fraud

What is Deepfake Identity Fraud?

Deepfake identity fraud occurs when criminals use AI-generated or manipulated images, videos, or voice recordings to impersonate another person and deceive individuals, businesses, financial institutions, or online platforms.

Scammers can combine deepfake technology with stolen personal information to make a fake identity appear remarkably convincing.

🚨 How the Scam Works

1️⃣ COLLECT
📸 Scammers obtain photographs, videos, voice recordings, or other personal information from social media, leaked databases, or other sources.

2️⃣ CREATE
🤖 AI tools are used to generate or manipulate a person’s face, voice, or video.

3️⃣ IMPERSONATE
🎭 The fraudster pretends to be the victim, a family member, senior executive, government official, celebrity, or another trusted person.

4️⃣ DECEIVE
📱 The deepfake is used during a video call, through social media, messaging apps, or fraudulent documents.

5️⃣ EXPLOIT
💰 The victim may be persuaded to transfer money, disclose confidential information, approve a transaction, or provide access to an account.

⚠️ Warning Signs

Be cautious when:

  • Someone suddenly contacts you using a new account or number.
  • A video caller makes an unusual financial or confidential request.
  • The person’s appearance, voice, or lip movements seem slightly unnatural.
  • Someone refuses independent verification.
  • A supposed executive or official demands an urgent transfer.
  • You receive a video or audio message that seems inconsistent with the person’s usual behaviour.
  • Someone asks for OTPs, passwords, banking information, or identity documents.

Important: Not every deepfake will have obvious visual glitches. Modern AI-generated content can be highly convincing.

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself

VERIFY THE PERSON — NOT JUST THE VIDEO.

📞 Call the person through a known, trusted number.

👥 Confirm unusual requests through another trusted channel.

🔐 Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication.

📱 Review the privacy settings of your social media accounts and limit unnecessary public photographs and personal information.

💰 Never transfer money solely because you receive a convincing voice or video message.

🏢 For businesses, establish procedures requiring independent verification of unusual payment or account-change requests.

🚨 If You Become a Victim

  • Stop further communication or payments where appropriate.
  • Contact your bank immediately if money has been transferred.
  • Call 1930 if you have suffered financial cyber fraud.
  • Report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
  • Preserve the original videos, images, audio, messages, usernames, phone numbers and URLs.
  • Do not delete potentially relevant evidence.
  • Report fraudulent accounts or content to the relevant platform.

Remember

A face can be fabricated. A voice can be cloned. Verification is your strongest defence.

STOP → VERIFY → CONFIRM → ACT

Before trusting a video, voice message, or online identity, verify the person through an independent channel.
