Family Cyber Safety Checklist

A Simple Guide to Keeping Your Family Safe Online

Cybercriminals do not target only individuals—they target families. Children, parents, grandparents, and even tech-savvy family members can become victims of phishing, UPI fraud, identity theft, account hacking, impersonation, and online scams.

The best protection is awareness + good digital habits + open communication.

Use this checklist to help your family stay safer online.

☐ Demands immediate payment.

☐ Requests an OTP.

☐ Asks for a UPI PIN.

☐ Asks you to install an app.

☐ Requests remote access to your phone.

☐ Claims your account will be blocked unless you act immediately.

Family Rule: STOP – THINK – VERIFY

Stop: Don’t act immediately.

Think: Is this really necessary?

Verify: Contact the organisation through its official website or known contact number.

👵 5. Protect Elderly Family Members

Older family members can be particularly vulnerable to impersonation and financial scams.

Help them:

☐ Save official bank contact numbers.

☐ Learn how UPI payments work.

☐ Understand that OTPs must never be shared.

☐ Recognise fake “digital arrest” threats.

☐ Identify fake customer-care numbers.

☐ Avoid unknown investment schemes.

☐ Avoid clicking unknown links.

☐ Ask a trusted family member before making an unusual payment.

☐ Understand that legitimate authorities do not demand immediate payment through UPI or gift cards to avoid arrest.

💡 Family Safety Practice

Encourage elderly family members to call a trusted family member before making an unusual or high-value online payment.

👧 6. Protect Children and Teenagers

☐ Teach children not to share personal information online.

“If something feels wrong, tell someone.”

Early reporting can make a difference—especially in financial cyber fraud.
