🚨 I TRANSFERRED MONEY TO A SCAMMER

DON’T WAIT. ACT NOW.
If you have just transferred money to a scammer, there may still be a chance to stop or trace the funds. Speed is critical.
🛑 1. CALL 1930 IMMEDIATELY
In India, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930 and report the financial cyber fraud immediately. The service is available 24/7. (Cyber Crime Portal)
National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
Do this even if the transaction happened only minutes ago.
🏦 2. CONTACT YOUR BANK / PAYMENT PROVIDER
Tell them:
“I am a victim of cyber financial fraud. Please immediately flag the transaction and take all possible steps to stop, hold, or recall the funds.”
Give them:
- Transaction ID / UTR
- Amount
- Date and time
- Recipient account/UPI ID
- Screenshots
- Payment method
RBI advises customers to notify their bank immediately after noticing an unauthorized electronic transaction; delay can increase the potential loss. (Reserve Bank of India)
💳 3. IF YOU PAID THROUGH UPI
Immediately report the transaction through your UPI app/payment provider and your bank.
Keep the:
UPI transaction ID + recipient UPI ID + screenshot
Do not send another payment to the scammer claiming it is needed to “reverse” the first transaction.
💳 4. IF YOU USED A CARD
Contact the card issuer immediately and report the fraudulent transaction.
Ask about:
- Blocking the card
- Disputing the transaction
- Replacing the card
- Securing the account
🔐 5. IF YOU SHARED PASSWORDS OR OTPs
Immediately secure the affected accounts.
Change:
- Banking password
- Email password
- Social-media passwords
- Other accounts where the same password was reused
Enable 2FA and review active sessions.
If you shared banking credentials, tell your bank exactly what was disclosed.
📱 6. IF YOU INSTALLED AN APK OR REMOTE-ACCESS APP
Treat the device as potentially compromised.
Do not continue using it for banking.
From a trusted device:
- Contact your bank.
- Secure important accounts.
- Change passwords where necessary.
- Review account activity.
Preserve the suspicious app/file, messages, phone numbers and links where safely possible for investigation.
📸 7. PRESERVE EVERYTHING
DO NOT DELETE THE CHAT.
Save:
📱 Scammer’s phone number
👤 WhatsApp/Telegram username
💬 Messages and chats
🔗 URLs
📧 Emails
💳 Transaction receipts
🔢 UTR/transaction IDs
🏦 Bank statements
📸 Screenshots
🎙️ Call details/recordings where lawfully available
The cybercrime reporting process asks for information such as the bank/wallet, account or UPI details, transaction ID/date and screenshots where available. (Cyber Crime Portal)
🚫 8. DON’T PAY THE SCAMMER AGAIN
You may hear:
“Pay ₹10,000 to release your refund.”
“Pay tax before we return your money.”
“Send another payment to reverse the transaction.”
“Pay our recovery fee.”
🚨 STOP.
These can be recovery scams designed to exploit someone who has already been defrauded.
💰 CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK?
Possibly—but there is no guarantee.
The outcome depends on factors including:
- How quickly you reported the transaction.
- Whether the funds can still be traced or frozen.
- The payment method.
- Whether the money has already been moved through other accounts.
- The circumstances of the transaction.
For certain unauthorized electronic transactions, RBI’s customer-protection framework provides for zero or limited liability in specified circumstances, particularly where the customer promptly reports a qualifying third-party breach. However, the rules differ depending on the circumstances, and voluntarily authorizing a scam payment is not automatically covered by those protections. (Reserve Bank of India)
So don’t assume either that the money is definitely lost or that the bank must automatically refund it. Report it immediately.
