🚨 EXTORTION & BLACKMAIL

Someone is demanding money, property, information, or an action by threatening you? DON’T PAY IN PANIC.
Extortion can happen online or offline. Cybercriminals may use private photographs, videos, personal information, alleged criminal cases, hacked accounts, fake legal threats, or threats against family/businesses to pressure victims.

💸 Recovery extortion
“Pay a fee and we’ll recover your stolen money.”
🛑 WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
1. DON’T PAY
Paying does not guarantee that the threats will stop.
In many scams, the first payment is followed by:
“One more payment.”
“Pay the final verification fee.”
“Pay the deletion charge.”
🚨 Don’t enter an endless payment cycle.
📵 2. STOP NEGOTIATING
Don’t threaten the extortionist.
Don’t bargain unless there is a compelling safety reason to do so.
Don’t provide additional information that could help them manipulate you.
📸 3. PRESERVE THE EVIDENCE
Save:
- Screenshots
- Phone numbers
- Usernames
- Profile URLs
- Emails
- Messages
- Threats
- Payment demands
- Bank/UPI details
- Transaction IDs
- Images/videos
- Dates and times
Don’t delete the conversation.
If content is likely to disappear, preserve the relevant information promptly.
🔐 4. SECURE YOUR ACCOUNTS
If the extortionist has obtained account credentials:
Immediately:
- Change passwords.
- Enable 2FA.
- Sign out unfamiliar devices.
- Check recovery email/phone numbers.
- Remove unfamiliar connected apps.
- Secure your primary email account.
If banking information is involved:
Contact your bank immediately.
💸 5. IF YOU ALREADY PAID
ACT IMMEDIATELY.
📞 Call 1930 for financial cyber fraud in India.
Then report through:
National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
Contact your bank/payment provider and provide:
UTR/transaction ID + amount + recipient details + screenshots.
🚨 Don’t pay the extortionist again.
📸 IF THEY HAVE PRIVATE PHOTOS OR VIDEOS
DON’T PANIC.
Do not send more material.
Do not pay simply because they claim they will publish it.
Preserve:
📱 Account details
💬 Threats
💰 Payment demands
🔗 URLs
📸 Screenshots
Report the account/content through the platform’s reporting mechanisms and consider reporting the matter to the appropriate authorities.
If intimate material involving a minor is involved:
Do not download, forward, or redistribute it. Report it immediately through appropriate law-enforcement/child-protection channels.
👮 IF THEY CLAIM YOU WILL BE ARRESTED
A scammer may say:
“You are under digital arrest.”
“Your Aadhaar is linked to a criminal case.”
“Pay bail immediately.”
“Your account is involved in money laundering.”
🚩 These are common fear-based scam tactics.
Disconnect. Verify independently. Don’t transfer money.
If there is a genuine legal proceeding, seek independent legal advice rather than relying on the caller’s instructions.
🧑⚖️ WHEN LEGAL HELP MAY BE IMPORTANT
Consider professional legal assistance where:
- The threats are continuing.
- You are being blackmailed with intimate material.
- Your reputation is being targeted.
- A business is being threatened.
- The perpetrator knows your home/workplace.
- You have received a genuine police/court notice.
- A significant amount of money has been demanded or transferred.
- Multiple jurisdictions are involved.
- Your accounts or identity have been compromised.
A lawyer can help assess criminal complaints, evidence preservation, platform remedies, injunctions, privacy/reputation issues and other available remedies, depending on the facts.
🚨 IF YOU FEAR PHYSICAL HARM
If the person is threatening violence, knows your location, is following you, or may come to your home/workplace:
Prioritise physical safety.
Contact local police/emergency services and tell someone you trust.
Don’t agree to meet the person alone.

🛑 BREAK THE CYCLE.
Don’t let the first payment become the beginning of repeated payments.

💙 REMEMBER
SHAME IS THE SCAMMER’S WEAPON. DON’T LET IT SILENCE YOU.
You are not required to solve the situation alone.
