🚨 I’M BEING THREATENED

Your safety comes first. Don’t panic, don’t confront the person, and don’t make rushed payments or promises.

Threats can happen through WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, phone calls, email, dating apps, social media, or in person.

🛑 IF YOU ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER

GET TO A SAFE PLACE NOW.

If someone is threatening to hurt you, knows where you live/work, is following you, or may arrive shortly:

  • 🚪 Move somewhere safe and, if possible, stay with other people.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Tell someone you trust immediately.
  • 👮 Contact your local police/emergency services.
  • 🚫 Don’t meet the person alone.
  • 🚫 Don’t confront or threaten them.

Your immediate physical safety is more important than preserving digital evidence.

📱 IF THE THREAT IS ONLINE

1. STOP ENGAGING

Don’t argue, threaten, or challenge the person.

If responding isn’t necessary for your immediate safety, stop communicating.

2. DON’T PAY

If the person demands money in exchange for stopping the threat:

“Pay me or I’ll expose you.”

“Send money or I’ll hurt you.”

“Pay or I’ll publish your information.”

🚨 Don’t assume paying will end the threats.

📸 3. PRESERVE THE EVIDENCE

Where it is safe to do so, save:

  • 📱 Phone numbers
  • 👤 Usernames
  • 🔗 Profile URLs
  • 💬 Messages
  • 📸 Screenshots
  • 🎥 Videos/images
  • 📧 Emails
  • 🎙️ Relevant call information
  • 💰 Payment demands
  • 📅 Dates and times

Don’t delete the conversation.

Keep the original files and messages where possible.

🔐 4. SECURE YOUR ACCOUNTS

If the person may have accessed your account:

Change your password.

Enable 2FA.

Check logged-in devices.

Remove unfamiliar sessions.

Check recovery email/phone numbers.

Secure your primary email account.

If banking information is involved, contact your bank immediately.

🚨 IF IT INVOLVES BLACKMAIL

If someone threatens to release:

📸 Private photographs
🎥 Videos
💬 Messages
🪪 Identity documents
🏠 Personal information
💼 Workplace information

unless you comply with their demands:

DON’T PAY AND DON’T SEND MORE INFORMATION.

Preserve the threats and report the incident.

💸 IF YOU ALREADY SENT MONEY

ACT IMMEDIATELY.

Also contact your bank/payment provider immediately and provide the transaction details.

👮 REPORT THE THREAT

For serious cyber threats, harassment, blackmail or other online offences, you can report the matter through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

If the threat concerns immediate physical harm, contact local police/emergency services rather than relying solely on an online complaint.

⚖️ WHEN PROFESSIONAL LEGAL HELP MAY BE IMPORTANT

Consider speaking with a lawyer if:

  • The threats are continuing.
  • You are being blackmailed.
  • Money is being demanded.
  • Private/intimate material is involved.
  • Someone is impersonating you.
  • Your family or employer is being contacted.
  • Your reputation is being threatened.
  • The person knows your location.
  • You have received an official legal notice.
  • The situation involves multiple countries or platforms.

A lawyer can help assess appropriate criminal, civil, privacy, defamation, injunction or other remedies, depending on the circumstances.
