Online Shopping Scam

What is an Online Shopping Scam?

An Online Shopping Scam is a form of cyber fraud in which criminals deceive consumers into paying for goods or services that are never delivered, are counterfeit, or are significantly different from what was advertised. These scams commonly occur through fake e-commerce websites, fraudulent social media advertisements, cloned online stores, and fake seller profiles on online marketplaces.

Fraudsters often attract victims by advertising branded products at heavily discounted prices, creating fake websites that closely resemble genuine online retailers, or demanding advance payment through UPI, bank transfers, or digital wallets. Once payment is made, the seller may stop responding, deliver counterfeit or defective products, or never dispatch the order.

Legitimate online retailers provide transparent contact information, secure payment options, and verifiable customer support.

Warning Signs

Be cautious if a seller:

  • Offers products at prices that appear significantly lower than market value.
  • Insists on advance payment through UPI, bank transfer, or personal accounts instead of secure payment gateways.
  • Operates through an unfamiliar website with poor design, spelling errors, or incomplete contact information.
  • Refuses to provide invoices, tracking details, or return policies.
  • Creates urgency by claiming that the offer is available for a limited time only.
  • Communicates exclusively through messaging applications or social media without any official business presence.

What Should You Do?

If you suspect an online shopping scam:

  • Stop all further communication with the seller.
  • Preserve all evidence, including advertisements, order confirmations, payment receipts, screenshots, emails, and chat conversations.
  • Contact your bank immediately if payment has been made and report the transaction as fraudulent.
  • Report the incident by calling 1930 and file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
  • If the purchase was made through a legitimate marketplace, report the seller using the platform’s grievance or customer support mechanism.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Shop only from trusted and well-established e-commerce platforms or verified sellers.
  • Verify website URLs carefully before making payments.
  • Read customer reviews from multiple independent sources.
  • Prefer secure payment methods and avoid making advance payments directly to personal bank accounts or UPI IDs unless you have independently verified the seller.
  • Be cautious of advertisements on social media offering expensive products at unrealistically low prices.

Remember

If a deal appears too good to be true, it usually is. Always verify the seller, use secure payment methods, and avoid making impulsive purchases based solely on heavy discounts or limited-time offers.
