What is WhatsApp Hacking?
WhatsApp Hacking refers to the unauthorised access or takeover of a user’s WhatsApp account by cybercriminals. In most cases, fraudsters do not “hack” WhatsApp by breaking its security. Instead, they manipulate users into sharing verification codes, linking their account to another device, or installing malicious applications.
Once they gain access, fraudsters may impersonate the victim to request money from family and friends, steal personal information, commit identity fraud, or spread malicious links.
Most WhatsApp account takeovers occur due to social engineering rather than technical hacking.
Warning Signs
Be cautious if:
- You receive an unexpected request to share a six-digit verification code.
- Someone asks you to scan an unfamiliar WhatsApp QR code.
- You are suddenly logged out of your WhatsApp account.
- Friends or family report receiving unusual messages from your number.
- Unknown devices appear in your linked devices list.
- You receive messages about account verification that you did not initiate.
What Should You Do?
If you suspect your WhatsApp account has been compromised:
- Immediately attempt to log back into WhatsApp using your registered mobile number.
- Enable two-step verification if it has not already been activated.
- Log out of all linked devices that you do not recognise.
- Inform your contacts that your account may have been compromised.
- Preserve screenshots, messages, and any suspicious communications.
- If money has been transferred as part of the scam, contact your bank immediately and report the incident by calling 1930 and filing a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never share your WhatsApp verification code or OTP with anyone.
- Enable WhatsApp’s two-step verification feature.
- Regularly review your linked devices and remove unfamiliar sessions.
- Avoid scanning QR codes sent by unknown individuals.
- Download WhatsApp only from official app stores.
- Be cautious of messages requesting urgent financial assistance, even if they appear to come from someone you know. Verify such requests through a separate phone call.

Your WhatsApp verification code is the key to your account. No legitimate person or organisation will ever ask you to share it. If someone requests your verification code or asks you to scan an unfamiliar QR code, treat it as a potential scam and verify independently before taking any action.
