📱 WhatsApp Scams: How to Recognize, Avoid, and Report Them

WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging platforms in India, making it a frequent target for cybercriminals. Scammers exploit trust, urgency, and curiosity to steal money, personal information, or even take over your account.

🚨 Common WhatsApp Scams

1. OTP & Account Takeover Scam

How it works

A scammer contacts you pretending to be a friend, family member, or WhatsApp support. They ask you to share a six-digit verification code (OTP) sent to your phone.

Once you share the code, they register your WhatsApp account on another device and lock you out.

Warning Signs

  • Someone asks for your WhatsApp verification code.
  • They claim the code was sent to you “by mistake.”
  • They pressure you to respond immediately.

Protect Yourself

✅ Never share your WhatsApp verification code or OTP.
✅ Enable WhatsApp’s Two-Step Verification (PIN).
✅ Inform your contacts if your account is compromised.

2. Family or Friend Impersonation Scam

How it works

A scammer creates a WhatsApp account using someone else’s name and profile photo. They message you claiming they have a new phone number and urgently need money.

Warning Signs

  • “Hi, this is my new number.”
  • Requests for urgent financial help.
  • Pressure to transfer money immediately.

Protect Yourself

✅ Call the person on their original number before sending money.
✅ Verify their identity through another communication channel.

3. Job Offer Scam

How it works

Scammers offer part-time jobs, online reviews, or work-from-home opportunities with attractive salaries. Victims may receive small payments initially before being asked to pay registration fees or “unlock” higher earnings.

Warning Signs

  • Unrealistic salaries.
  • No interview process.
  • Requests for registration fees or deposits.
  • Contact only through WhatsApp.

Protect Yourself

✅ Legitimate employers do not charge recruitment fees.
✅ Verify the company’s website and contact details independently.

4. Investment & Trading Scam

How it works

Victims are added to WhatsApp groups claiming to offer expert stock tips or cryptocurrency investments. Fake profits are shown to encourage larger investments before the scammers disappear.

Warning Signs

  • Guaranteed high returns.
  • “Limited-time investment opportunity.”
  • Pressure to invest quickly.
  • Fake testimonials and screenshots.

Protect Yourself

✅ Be cautious of investment advice received through messaging apps.
✅ Verify whether the investment platform and advisors are properly regulated before investing.

5. Lottery & Prize Scam

How it works

You receive a message claiming you have won a lottery, smartphone, or cash prize. To claim it, you’re asked to pay processing fees or share personal information.

Warning Signs

  • You never entered a contest.
  • Requests for payment before receiving the prize.
  • Poor grammar or suspicious links.

Protect Yourself

✅ Genuine prizes do not require advance payment.
✅ Ignore and report such messages.

6. Fake Customer Support Scam

How it works

Scammers pose as representatives of banks, payment apps, telecom providers, or e-commerce companies. They ask for OTPs, passwords, or ask you to install remote access apps.

Warning Signs

  • Requests for OTPs or PINs.
  • Instructions to install screen-sharing apps.
  • Pressure to act immediately.

Protect Yourself

✅ Contact customer support only through official websites or verified phone numbers.
✅ Never install remote access apps at someone else’s request.

7. QR Code Payment Scam

How it works

The scammer claims they need to send you money and asks you to scan a QR code. Instead of receiving money, you unknowingly authorize a payment.

Warning Signs

  • Someone asks you to scan a QR code to receive money.
  • Requests to enter your UPI PIN after scanning.

Protect Yourself

✅ Scanning a QR code is generally used to make a payment, not receive one.
✅ Never enter your UPI PIN unless you are intentionally making a payment.

How it works

Victims receive messages stating their bank account, SIM card, or wallet will be blocked unless they complete KYC immediately by clicking a link or installing an app.

Warning Signs

  • Urgent account suspension warnings.
  • Links to unofficial websites.
  • Requests to install APK files.

Protect Yourself

✅ Complete KYC only through the official app, website, or branch of your service provider.

Protect Yourself

✅ Donate only to verified charities and organizations after independent verification.
